School may be secure…but is the teachers staffroom?

There are areas in a school where the virus is more likely to spread, in and around classrooms, halls, school gates, playground and staff rooms where people gather.

Many school are creating bubbles in the classroom to stop the spread particularly in primary schools. In older children where this is more difficult as lessons are not taught in one classroom and corridors can become crowded as children make their way to classes – masks are being used where social distancing is not possible.

In classrooms social distanced desks can be arrange so pupils are facing forward, sneeze screens and re-purposing other classrooms is ideal…but not every school has that kind of space. Spacing desks as much as possible, opening windows to create ventilation and regular cleaning all helps.

Possible the riskiest place though in the whole school is the teachers staffroom, because its full of adults who are more at risk of becoming ill from COVID-19 than pupils. In some schools staff areas are being cordoned off, but there are their ways to make these areas secure.

Creating a spacious layout of furniture, easy clean chairs, segregated seating areas, kitchen preparation screens, non touch hand cleaning stations and plastic screens in are just some of the solutions that may help teachers to feel safer.
